The Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians, the first indigenous Congregation of North East India was founded on October 24, 1942, in Guwahati, Assam, by Venerable Stephen Ferrando, SDB, the then Bishop of Shillong, with eight girls as the first postulants who entered the novitiate. It unceasingly continues to expand its mission worldwide. Now there are 1500 professed sisters from about 75 ethnic tribes. This year 2025, the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians Marks 83 Years of Growth with Record Professions and Global Reach.

Operating 206 centers across 61 dioceses, the sisters serve in India, Italy, Swaziland, Lesotho, Johannesburg, South Sudan, Mozambique, Ethiopia, the Hawaiian Islands in the USA, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea (PNG), the Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Germany.

The congregation saw strong vocational growth last year (2024), with 44 sisters making their final profession and 66 taking their first vows including five newly professed sisters from Myanmar. This year brought continued momentum: 22 sisters finalized their vows, 62 made first professions, and one new sister from Myanmar joined the ranks.

It entered into Myanmar, Kalay Diocese on April 22, 2017. Now there are two convents; one in Kalay town, and another in Tedim town, serving the poor young girls and evangelizing the neighbouring people.
